Reverend Robert Levens was born in Hartford, CT, the son of James and Margaret (O’Connell) Levens and was raised in East Hartford, CT, in a family that included his older brother, Jim, and his twin sister, Brenda. After graduating from Fairfield U., he taught mathematics at Fairfield Prep for nine years (1966-1975) and served as department chair for five (1970-1975). He entered the Society of Jesus in 1975 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1981.
His apostolic assignments as a Jesuit include: Fairfield Prep (teaching religion and serving as student chaplain, 1982-1987); Bishop Connolly High School, Fall River, MA (teaching math and religion, 1988-1995); Boston, MA: Provincial Staff and Socius (Executive Assistant to the Provincial, 1995-1997); and Fairfield Prep (serving as faculty chaplain, 2004-2010).
Fr. Levens has also held positions of leadership in the Society of Jesus: Superior of the Jesuit Community at Bishop Connolly High School, 1990-1995; Superior of the Jesuit Provincial Community, Boston, 1995-1997; Provincial, New England Province of the Society of Jesus, 1997-2003; and Superior, Jesuit Community at Campion Residence and Renewal Center, Weston, MA, 2010-2017.
In 2017, he was missioned to Cheverus High School, Portland, ME, to serve as chaplain for the faculty and staff. In 2018, he was appointed Superior of the Jesuit Community in Maine. Fr. Levens was missioned to return to Campion Center as Minister of the Jesuit Community, an assignment he began in July, 2021.
